What is a Rego Check?

A rego check is a mandatory inspection that confirms your vehicle is roadworthy and complies with NSW safety & emissions requirements. Without this check, you cannot renew or apply for registration. We assess brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts, visibility items and basic emissions to ensure safe operation on the road.

Pink Slip Inspection

A Pink Slip inspection, also known as an eSafety check, is needed for most vehicles over five years old when renewing registration. It involves checking:

Brakes, tyres, suspension and steering

Headlights, indicators, brake lights and horn

Seatbelts and safety systems

Windscreen, wipers and mirrors

Exhaust condition and visible emissions

Engine operations and oil leaks

Once passed, your eSafety certificate is sent directly to Transport for NSW, so you can renew your rego immediately online or at Service NSW.

If your vehicle passes

Your eSafety certificate is valid for 6-months, allowing you to renew your registration within that timeframe.

If your vehicle fails

You’ll be given a report listing the issues. Repairs must be completed within 14 days and the vehicle returned to the same station for a free re-inspection. After 14 days, the full inspection fee applies again.

Blue Slip Inspection

A Blue Slip is a more detailed inspection required in NSW before certain vehicles can be registered. You’ll need a Blue Slip if:

The vehicle has been unregistered for more than 3-months

It has been purchased from interstate or overseas

The vehicle is imported or has been re-engineered/re-complied

It was previously a write-off that has since been repaired and approved for re-registration

The vehicle has no registration or number plates

Unlike a Pink Slip, a Blue Slip involves both a safety check and a compliance and identity verification. We confirm the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), engine number and chassis details, along with ensuring the car meets NSW design and safety standards.

Because of these additional checks, a Blue Slip inspection usually takes longer than a Pink Slip. Once passed, you can apply for registration through Transport for NSW.

If your vehicle passes

Once your Blue Slip is approved, you can apply for registration with Transport for NSW straight away.

If your vehicle fails

You’ll be provided with a report detailing the issues. Unlike a Pink Slip, there is no free re-inspection period. A full new Blue Slip inspection is required once the repairs are completed.
