Classic Holdens don’t just deserve to look good – they need to be mechanically sound, safe, and enjoyable to drive. This blue VK Commodore came into Matt Gates Automotive as a well-loved project that needed attention across multiple areas to bring it up to the standard it deserved.
From oil leaks to driveline issues, this VK turned into a rewarding and detailed build that combined mechanical repairs, custom work, and problem-solving.
What We did
Mechanical Repairs & Leak Rectification
One of the first priorities was mechanical repairs by addressing several leaks that had developed over time. Our team tracked down and repaired multiple oil leaks, ensuring the engine was clean, sealed, and reliable moving forward. We also repaired coolant leaks, preventing overheating issues and improving overall cooling system efficiency.
Induction & Engine Bay Improvements
To enhance both function and appearance, we fitted a genuine HDT bonnet scoop, giving the VK a proper classic muscle look. Alongside this, we worked with our metal fabricator to fit a new airbox and air filter, improving airflow while keeping everything neat, secure, and purpose-built for the car.
Suspension, Brakes & Driving Feel
The VK was suffering from suspension knocks that were taking away from the driving experience. These were diagnosed and repaired, resulting in a tighter, more confidence-inspiring ride.
We also carried out repairs and adjustments to the brake system, ensuring safe and consistent stopping power to match the car’s performance.
Fuel, Exhaust & Small Fixes That Matter
Classic cars often come with a list of “small issues” that add up. On this VK, we completed multiple repairs across the fuel system and exhaust system, addressing faults that affected drivability, reliability, and overall performance.
It’s the attention to these smaller details that separates a car that merely runs from one that genuinely drives well.
Driveline Repairs & Precision Machining
During the build, we rebuilt the rear wheel bearings and uncovered a faulty, poorly built shortened differential. This was a major find and could have caused serious issues down the line.
Working closely with our tyre fitter and turner, we repaired and re-machined the differential & axles correctly, ensuring proper tolerances, reliability, and long-term durability. This step was critical in making sure the VK was not only enjoyable, but safe to drive.
The Final Result
The end result is a VK Commodore that looks tough, drives properly, and has had the important mechanical work done the right way. With leaks fixed, suspension sorted, driveline corrected, and custom fabrication completed, this classic is now ready to be driven and enjoyed as intended.
